This coming weekend marks the 10th annual Magical Ice Fest in St. Joseph, Michigan. In the past couple of years, warm winter weather had threatened to hamper the festival by allowing the carvings to melt soon after they were completed. This year, however, the Polar Vortex should help keep the carvings fully in tact all weekend.
Despite all the snow we have gotten so far, there will be tons of fun to be had at the Ice Fest. From a scavenger hunt through the businesses of lovely downtown St. Joe, to an exciting ice carving contest, there is lots to see and do no matter what weather Mother Nature brings! To learn more about all the events for the Magical Ice Fest, check out the schedule at the St. Joe Today website: http://www.stjoetoday.com/all-events/31-featured-events/1177-10th-annual-magical-ice-fest .
If you are travelling into town to enjoy the festivities, we still have some rooms available at The Painted Turtle Inn. After walking around downtown and admiring the sculptures, head back to the Inn and warm up by the fire with some hot cocoa. Then, after your three-course breakfast the next morning, head back to the festival to enjoy more of the activities.

After years of planning and months of construction, the day is finally upon us! In just ten short days on May 23, 2013 The Painted Turtle Inn Bed and Breakfast in Saint Joseph, Michigan will finally open! Our ribbon cutting is scheduled for 11:30 am on that day with an open house to follow until 7pm. This event is open to the public so everyone can stop by and check out the new lodging option in town.
This week, we will be busily beginning to furnish the rooms. So far, we have three of the five rooms cleaned and ready to be outfitted!
The Dragonfly Room ready for furnishings
The Dragonfly Room has a rustic garden theme; think more like a chic garden shed, not your grandmother’s flowered wallpaper bedroom. The sage green walls are soothing and the spa shower features fun pennyround tiles. This room also has three vintage stained glass windows in the hallway that connects the bedroom with the private bath.
Dunegrass Room ready for furnishings
The Dunegrass Room has an airy beach theme. The walls are sand colored and look sharp with the dark wood floor. The bathroom has an awesome freestanding airbath tub next to the shower with tile that looks like swirling sand and real pebbles as the shower floor. You’ll really feel like you are at the beach!
Moonlight Serenade Room ready for furnishings
The Moonlight Serenade room has a very contemporary grey and white color scheme. The stark contrast of the colors paired with hints of stainless steel and brushed nickel add a modern feel to this very comfortable room. The charcoal grey shower really starts your day off in a zen way!

Despite the flurry of activity at our St. Joseph, Michigan Bed and Breakfast, we unfortunately will not be open in time for this spring’s Blossomtime Festival that has punctuated the start of spring here in Southwest Michigan. The Blossomtime Parade began in 1923 with a floral parade to promote the rapidly expanding abundance of produce being grown in the area. The parade has grown over the years and has become one of the largest and most anticipated events by locals and visitors to St. Joseph and surrounding communities.
Speaking of the flurry of activity at the Bed and Breakfast, we are well into our second week of finish carpentry, painting and tile work. The rooms are really starting to take shape now that there is color on the walls and some tile in the bathrooms. With every new bit of finish work that is completed, I get more and more excited about how awesome the rooms are looking. I can’t wait to host guests and share my excitement with them!

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Here at The Painted Turtle Inn in lovely St. Joseph, Michigan, we agree. Wholeheartedly. Because it is so important, we do lots of testing before we let a recipe “go live” to our guests. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it!
Cinnamon Rolls at The Painted Turtle Inn
A friend of mine, who is an avid cook, is really good at coming up with recipes and changing existing recipes to make them better. When I heard she had come up with a winning cinnamon roll recipe, I knew I had to try it! Of course I also made a few adjustments to suit my tastes, but overall it is a fantastic recipe. I am pretty sure our guests will agree….at least those of you who are lucky enough to stay at our Bed and Breakfast when we feature s00zer’s cinnamon rolls.

The lovely Minerva fountain in St. Joseph, MI awaiting her makover
There are several fountains in St. Joseph, Michigan, two of the more “famous” of them being the Maids of the Mist fountain and the Whirlpool Compass fountain. The Maids of the Mist has been a landmark on the bluff for many years and is always a popular spot for a photo op by many of the tourists who pass through our lovely city. The Whirlpool Compass fountain is a newcomer to the area. It is situated right in front of Silver Beach and provides hours of fun for kids and adults alike who enjoy cooling off in the water jets and playing on the splash pad on warm summer days.
This post, however, is a tribute to one of St. Joseph’s lesser-known fountains. Her name is Minerva and she has the pleasure of residing on the patio at The Painted Turtle Inn. Minerva’s previous caretaker has provided some history on this lovely fountain. The original owner of the house saw the fountain while on vacation in Philadelphia. It was love at first sight and Mrs. Parr just had to have her. So Minerva rode home on the top of the family station wagon all the way from Philadelphia to St. Joe where she still stands today. As you may glean from the photo of her, she is in need of a little TLC to bring her back to life. Lucky for her, she found us! We hope to have her back in service this summer….but you don’t get to see her unless you are guests of our Bed and Breakfast!

The lovely Cape Cod style home that houses The Painted Turtle Inn has been a flurry of activity since mid-January. Despite being ahead of its time when it was built, many of the furnishings and mechanical systems were outdated and worn. Our crew has come in to remove the old and bring in the new!
Unfortunately, we had to remove what we were told was the first ever surround sound system in the United States. A friend of the original owner wanted to test out this new idea and used this house to do just that. It was still connected to the original turntable and tube-style radio (which still works, by the way) and we used it for a bit, but sadly the time came to remove the cabinets the speakers were in so it had to go away.
One of the very cool things we are keeping, however, are the terrazzo floors in the hallway, kitchen and great room of the house. It is not very often that this type of floor is found in a residential setting, but they are in great condition and once we have them polished, I believe they will look brand new. Also staying will be the original hardwood floors on the second floor and the original parquet floor in the original library on the first floor. The wood floors will also be refinished to give them an updated look.
Once the remodeling is finished, we believe we will have one of the most unique homes in St. Joseph. With the views over the bluff of Lake Michigan and the extensive acreage behind the house, you can’t go wrong staying at The Painted Turtle Inn.
